Penstemon barbatus ssp. coccineus ‘Scarlet’ is a strong and cold-hardy beard tongue with scarlet-red, two-lipped tubular flowers up to two inches long that hang loosely on tall, upright, rigid stems offering much taller plants than other cultivars and with an airy, ethereal look. The long blue-green foliage is narrow, lance-shaped, and almost willow-like. Plants can reach 18-36 inches tall and 8-12 inches wide. Remove spent flowers to encourage rebloom. Use in the sunny border, rock, cottage or native garden. It also makes a good cut flower. Drought tolerant once established. Attracts hummingbirds and other pollinators. Deer resistant.
